Spike Reported In Scam Phone Calls Impersonating Officers

Bel Air Police report a rise in scam phone calls demanding money from residents on behalf of the police department.

BEL AIR, MD — The police department reports an increase in reports about scam phone calls impersonating police officers.

Bel Air Police stated that they would never ask for money, gift cards or prepaid cards over the phone.

Paying a fine over the phone would not clear a warrant, either, the police department said.

Scammers may:
• Claim you missed jury duty or have a warrant
• Threaten immediate arrest
• Force you to stay on the line
• Spoof caller ID numbers
• Demand payment using prepaid or gift cards

The police department recommends residents always hang up and never send money. Always verify any suspicious calls by contacting the police directly, too, they said.
