Telly-Winning Feature Inspires New We Cancerve Microgrant

BEL AIR, Md. (May 30, 2025) – The We Cancerve Movement, Inc. today announced a new microgrant, "Art with a Heart," with Joppatowne High School named as its inaugural recipient. The grant honors the memory of beloved Community School Specialist Niesha Jones, who teamed with School Social Worker Kim Bennett Selby on a We Cancerve Mother's Day project in 2024 providing hand-drawn stencils on canvases and individual paint kits to hospitalized children for gift creation.

The project was prominently featured in the Spring 2024 episode of On the Move with We Cancerve, the youth-led nonprofit's children's television show. Earlier this week, that episode earned three Telly Awards, recognizing excellence in video and television across all screens. Produced by HarfordTV, the show won a Silver Telly in the Social Impact category, and Bronze Telly in both the Advocacy & Causes, and Social Responsibility categories. This is We Cancerve’s first time receiving Telly honors since creating the show in 2023.

"We are incredibly proud to launch 'Art with a Heart' to continue the spirit of creativity and compassion that Ms. Jones embodied," said Grace Callwood, We Cancerve founder, who is a 2023 Edgewood High School graduate and rising Howard University junior. She is the TV show’s co-creator and an executive director. "Her collaboration with Mrs. Bennett-Selby and their dedication to students as scholars and good citizens is inspiring. We’re thrilled to support Joppatowne High School in carrying forward this meaningful work."

The new microgrant is designed to foster youth-led artistic expression in service to the community. One public school in Harford County, Maryland, will be eligible to receive between $300-$500 over the next five academic years. The grant encourages students to conceive, plan, and execute a service project that uses artistic expression to benefit the local community, honoring the legacy of collaboration and creativity exemplified by Niesha Jones. The microgrant is made possible through the We Cancerve Fund at the Community Foundation of Harford County. ABOUT WE CANCERVE

We Cancerve was started in 2012 when Callwood, at age seven, decided to bring happiness to homeless, sick and foster children -- all youth in sad situations through no fault of their own. To date, the nonprofit has reached more than 33,000 youth from Maryland and six other states, and four countries in Africa.
