Truck Fire Prompted Backups on I-95 North of Abingdon

Delays persisted for more than three hours, transportation officials reported.

Traffic was at a standstill on Interstate 95 north of Abingdon Friday morning due to a vehicle fire for several hours.

The incident cleared at 10:50 a.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Crews had responded to a tractor-trailer on fire between the exits for MD 24 and MD 543 at approximately 7:45 a.m., according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

All lanes had been blocked on I-95 north from approximately 7:45 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., according to state transportation officials.

By 8:30 a.m., one lane had reopened north of MD 24; however, traffic was for the most part not moving, and the Maryland Transportation Authority advised using US 40 as an alternate route.

Traffic was jammed on I-95 north between the exits for MD 24 and MD 543, and there was heavy traffic on MD 152, MD 7 and US 40 from bailout traffic, the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company reported.

After 11 a.m., congestion remained on I-95 north in the area of MD 543.
