Unsafe Behavior By Bicyclists, E-Bike Drivers Reported By Police
The Bel Air Police Department reminds bicyclists and e-bike drivers that they must obey Maryland traffic laws after witnessing close calls.
BEL AIR, MD — Bicyclists and e-bike riders are being reminded by the police department that they must following the same traffic laws as other vehicles.
As the weather warms up, police officers have noticed more bicyclists and e-bike riders across town, particularly along Main Street, at shopping centers and on Baltimore Pike. However, some of these riders are engaging in "unsafe" behavior and have experienced close calls involving other drivers and pedestrians.
"These incidents create safety concerns for both riders and the community. ... Riders are expected to obey traffic signals, ride in the direction of traffic, yield to pedestrians and operate safely," the Bel Air Police Department stated.

There also appears to be confusion about devices commonly referred to as “E-Motos.” These are not e-bikes, the police department clarified. E-motos are considered motor vehicles under Maryland law and require a valid driver’s license, registration and insurance. They are not allowed to be driven on sidewalks, trails or other areas where bicycles are allowed.
"Officers will be addressing reckless or unsafe riding, traffic violations and riding in prohibited areas. Safety is a shared responsibility and we appreciate the community’s cooperation in helping keep Bel Air safe for everyone," the police department stated.
