Why Were Bel Air Firefighters at Macy's?

The fire company responded to call at Harford Mall on Wednesday.

Officials said that smoke at the Macy’s in Harford Mall drew members of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company Wednesday morning to investigate an incident that was traced to a heater.

Someone at the store in the 600 block of Belair Road alerted the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, which was dispatched at 11:05 a.m., according to Jennifer Chenworth, spokeswoman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

“There was no fire,” Chenworth said; instead, the issue originated with a malfunctioning heating unit, according to Chenworth.

The smoke was coming from a malfunctioning air handler on the roof, the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company reported. An air handler is a device, sometimes contained in a metal box, that moves heated or cooled air through ductwork.

By 11:47 a.m., Chenworth said firefighters had cleared the scene.
