3 Maryland Companies Make Fortune 500 List For 2019

The annual Fortune 500 list ranks the top companies in the United States. See which Maryland companies made the cut.

MARYLAND — Fortune has released its annual list of the 500 top companies in America, which represent two-thirds of the U.S. GDP and have a total of $13.7 trillion in revenue, the magazine says. Of those 500 companies, three are based in Maryland.

Walmart topped the 2019 list, followed by Exxon Mobil and Apple, according to Fortune, which listed companies by total revenue. Berkshire Hathaway and Amazon ranked No. 4 and No.5, rounding out the top five spots on the list.

The three Maryland companies that made the Fortune 500 are based in Montgomery County, and one of them will be moving its headquarters elsewhere this coming year. Several Baltimore area companies fell just shy of the 500 list.

In Maryland, the following companies made the Fortune 500 list for 2019:

The jump of Discovery from 409 to 300 on the list was largely due to its acquisition of Scripps, according to Fortune.

Later in 2019, Discovery will move from Maryland to locate its headquarters in New York. The decision to move was based in part on the Scripps acquisition, which included a headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, and the fact that the media industry was centered in New York, according to The Washington Post, which reported that Discovery's Animal Planet is already based there in addition to Wall Street investors and Discovery's content production partners.

To put its data into context, Fortune writes that just a tenth of the companies on the list are responsible for nearly half of the total $13.7 trillion in revenue. (You can read more in detail about the list via Fortune here.)

These Maryland companies were on Fortune's radar but fell just outside the 500 rankings:

  • Host Hotels & Resorts, Bethesda — No. 502
  • McCormick, Hunt Valley — No. 514 (up from No. 539 last year)
  • T. Rowe Price, Baltimore — No. 519 (up from No. 540)

  • Ciena, Hanover — No. 744 (up from 770)
  • Sinclair Broadcast Group, Hunt Valley — No. 751 (up from 786)
