$675K Damage Caused by Silver Spring House Fire

A couple escaped their burning home on McCeney Avenue without injury; their vehicles, garage and house were damaged in the blaze.

SILVER SPRING, MD — A fire that began in a Silver Spring garage consumed two vehicles and spread into the home’s attic Wednesday night, causing $675,000 in damage, authorities said.

Residents of the home at 909 McCeney Ave. called 911 to report the fire just after 8 p.m. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crews found fire showing in the garage of the two-story single-family home with flames extending up into the attic.

The occupants, a husband and wife, were home at the time of the fire and escaped without injury. At first, the wife first noticed what she thought was steam coming from one side of the garage. She alerted her husband, who looked out another window and saw fire coming from the garage.

Both evacuated the home and dialed 911 once they were safely outside.

It took about 65 firefighters just over 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Fire investigators say a cause could not be determined. Many combustible items were found in the garage, as well as two vehicles, and all were severely damaged.

There were no injuries reported to fire and rescue personnel or civilians. Smoke alarms were activated by the fire.

Estimated damages totaled $675,000, with $400,000 to the home, $150,000 in vehicles and $125,000 to the contents.

Firefighters will return to the neighborhood around 3 p.m. Thursday to go door to door offering to check smoke alarms and provide safety tips for interested residents.
