Chevy Chase Endodontist Selected to Lecture at Tokyo Congress

Dr. Martin Levin was appointed as the U.S. Representative to the International Federation of Endodontic Associations in Tokyo, Japan during their 2013 congress. He also joined Dr. Sam Dorn, the present-elect of the organization, to present a lecture on the use of three dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in root canal treatment. Their program focused on an evidence-based appraisal of the technology and looked at use in clinical practice as well as the academic environment.

Dr. Levin reported that CBCT was used in many cases that were evaluated for endodontic treatment by Bethesda-Chevy Chase Root Canal Specialists. It was used mainly for evaluations of endodontic disease related to infected teeth, retreatments, trauma, root resorption, surgical planning and for use with medically complex patients. The benefit of CBCT is that it shows the teeth and jaws in 3D, allowing for the assessment of individual teeth and anatomic structures without the superimposition of other features. Dr. Mischenko stated that “CBCT allows us to see the true nature of root canal problems without the compaction of different structures that overly the teeth, such as the zygoma (cheek bone) and sinuses.”

Drs. Levin, Mischenko and Jong continue to teach colleagues about this technology by presenting seminars to other dentists and dental specialists in their office conference facility. Dr. Levin reports that their practice has used this technology for five years and have published numerous papers in the peer reviewed scientific literature.
