Community Steps Up After Angel-Tree Gifts Stolen

Two arrests after a group of teens stole MP3 players, other electronics and several bikes destined for poor children this Christmas.

Thanks to support from the public, The Salvation Army of the Capital Area says it will be a merry Christmas for thousands of children.

The last-minute assistance was needed after a group of teens riffled through hundreds of presents at an Angel Tree warehouse, stealing high-tech gifts and bikes.

The burglary was discovered Saturday morning at the 8th Street warehouse, according to WTOP.

“We will not be deterred,” reads a statement from the Salvation Army, a group that distributes gifts to more than 2,500 D.C. area families. “The stolen items will be replaced in time.”

Organizers thanked the public for stepping up and answering the call for support.

The Washington Nationals is encouraging fans to support the Salvation Army during its Winterfest event, which continues Sunday.


According to the Salvation Army, about 300 bags that were sealed with toys inside were ripped open, with the thieves removing MPR players, tablets and other electronic gifts. They also stole several bikes.

Police arrested two suspects on Saturday, according to the Salvation Army. Three other suspects are sought in the case, according to WTOP.
