Deepak Chopra, Jazz Musician, Australian Acrobats Coming To Strathmore This Fall

A wellness expert and holiday music from Maryland Classic Youth are coming to Strathmore.

BETHESDA-CHEVY CHASE, MD - From Strathmore: Strathmore today announces six new Music Center performances and events in its 2017–2018 Season. Adding to 21 main stage concerts currently on sale is thought-leader on wellness and integrative medicine Deepak Chopra with his new book, You Are the Universe. Acclaimed bandleader John Pizzarelli and Grammy-winning vocalist Catherine Russell pay tribute to icons Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday, while pianist Joey Alexander, the youngest jazz artist ever nominated for a Grammy, forecasts the future of jazz with his masterful playing and showmanship. Australia’s Circa ensemble combines death-defying acrobatics and bold storytelling in its spellbinding performance, “S,” with a score by Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet. Adding to the abundance of holiday cheer in the Music Center are Strathmore’s favorite saxman Dave Koz celebrating 20 years of holiday performances and Strathmore’s own Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras performing holiday staples from the classical canon. Pizzarelli and Russell are able to transport audiences to the glory days of jazz, capturing Holiday’s effortless grace and Sinatra’s cool swagger. Although this tour marks the duo’s first time together, they are no strangers to epic collaborations—Pizzarelli has worked with everyone from the Boston Pops Orchestra to Paul McCartney and Russell toured with David Bowie before going solo.

Lauded by critics for their creativity and talent, Australia’s Circa ensemble has combined death-defying acrobatics and bold storytelling in performances that have left audiences spellbound since 2006. “S” combines the daring acrobatics that Circa is known for with a dazzling pre-recorded score by the Grammy Award-winning Kronos Quartet, culminating in a performance that has been heralded as “stunning” and “sublime” (Le Devoir). Circa’s first performance at Strathmore will see seven talented acrobats fly, leap, and contort their way through a breathtaking spectacle of a show.

This jazz pianist isn’t old enough to drive, but he stuns audiences with his playful musicality and keen sense of swing. The youngest jazz artist ever nominated for a Grammy, Alexander, 14, showcases his growing talents as a bandleader, showman, and interpreter of jazz greats. This rising star’s short but indisputably impressive career includes two critically acclaimed albums, including his 2016 release Countdown, performances at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival, winning grand prize at the first Master-Jam Fest, outperforming 200 competitors from 17 countries, and a UNESCO invitation to perform for the legendary Herbie Hancock.
