Items are missing from a makeshift memorial in Bethesda that honors Jacob Cassell, the teen cyclist fatally struck by an SUV in July.
BETHESDA, MD — A number of sentimental keepsakes have gone missing from a makeshift memorial in Bethesda that honors Jacob Cassell, the teen who was fatally struck by an SUV while riding his bicycle along Old Georgetown Road this summer. News of the missing items was first reported by WTOP.
"A cross with Jake's name on it and a number of sentimental keepsakes left in memory of Jake by his friends are among the missing items," read a Nextdoor community post, attributed to Montgomery County Police Capt. Sean Gagen. "We kindly ask that the items be returned to the memorial site, no questions asked."
On the night of July 31, the 17-year-old Bethesda resident was traveling southbound on the sidewalk when he fell into the road and got hit by a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas. Cassell, who wore the "bulldog" mascot costume for Winston Churchill High School, was rushed to a local hospital, where he died the following morning.
