NBC4's Leon Harris Sentenced To Jail After DUI Arrest

NBC4 anchor Leon Harris was sentenced to jail Tuesday after pleading guilty to driving under the influence in Montgomery County.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — A Montgomery County district court judge sentenced NBC4 anchor Leon Harris to 10 days in jail on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, according to reports.

The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said Harris was sentenced to a year in jail. But the judge suspended all but 10 days of the sentence, WTOP reporter Neal Augenstein tweeted Tuesday.

Harris also was sentenced to three years of supervised probation and will have to use an interlock device on his car, according to Augenstein.

The anchor was charged with six misdemeanor crimes: driving under the influence, attempting to elude police, driving while impaired by alcohol, attempting to drive while impaired and two charges of failing to stay on the scene of an accident.

Court records showed that it was the second time Harris had been charged with DUI in Montgomery County, WTOP said.

NBC4 removed Harris from his anchoring duties after his DUI arrest and was later reinstated, according to the news station.

Harris apologized in an on-air message to viewers in March.

Harris worked as a news anchor at CNN for about 12 years before joining WJLA in Washington in 2003. In 2017, he joined NBC4.
