New Year's Hours for Giant, Safeway, Wegman's and More Maryland Stores

Some grocery stores are closed Jan. 1, including Costco and Trader Joe's, while others, like Food Lion and Harris Teeter, have normal hours.

If you find yourself hosting a brunch or dinner you didn’t plan on, many area grocery stores are open over the New Year’s holiday.

Here’s a list of New Year’s weekend hours for several stores, taken from their websites and the Holiday Shopping Hours website:

  • Safeway: On both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, all Maryland stores will be open for their regularly posted hours, the corporate headquarters says. Store hours are typically 5 a.m. to midnight, with a few 24 hours stores in Maryland, as well. See store for specific hours.
  • Giant: Stores open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and open regular hours on New Year’s Day. See store for specific hours.
  • Harris Teeter: Most stores open normal business hours on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • Wegmans: Most stores open normal business hours on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • Food Lion: Most stores open normal business hours on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
  • Target: Most stores have extended hours on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Dec. 31; 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Jan. 1. See store for specific hours.
  • Walmart: Many locations close at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, then open for normal business hours on New Year’s Day.
  • Whole Foods Market: Many stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 31; and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 1.
  • Costco: Stores open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve; closed on New Year’s Day.
  • Trader Joe’s: All stores will close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and are closed on Jan. 1.
