Norwood School Hosts Horizons 5K Run/Walk and Fun Run

Bethesda, MD, March 2016 -- Norwood School, an independent, coeducational K-8 school in Bethesda, will host the Horizons 5K Run/Walk and Fun Run on Sunday, April 10, 2016. All proceeds will benefit Horizons Greater Washington, a nonprofit organization that develops public-private partnerships between independent and public school communities to provide academic, cultural, and recreational programs designed to empower economically disadvantaged students to realize their full potential.

The certified race will start and finish on Norwood’s 38 -acre campus at the corner of River Road and Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda.The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m.; the one-mile Fun Run starts at 8:40 a.m. Registration is available online at http://www.horizons5k.org/registration.html, as well as on-site beginning at 7:00 a.m. on race day. The cost to register is $35. Free and convenient parking is available on Norwood’s campus.

Awards for the adult portion of the event will be presented in categories such as male, female, specific age groups, and overall first and second places.

Race sponsors include Norwood School, HimanBrown Charitable Trust, CustomInk, Dentons, Kids Smile Dentistry, MotionSoft, The Fleisher Group, Equinox, David Mitchell and Nicole Solomon Mitchell, Mary Pat and Darren Alcus, and Hillary and Thomas Baltimore.

Horizons Greater Washington began in 2000 as an affiliate of Horizons National. This unique network of community-based programs is geared toward helping low-income public school students grow in skills and confidence through a six-week summer enrichment program held on the campuses of independent schools or colleges and universities nationwide. On average, 85 percent of Horizons Greater Washington students attend college after graduating from high school.

In 2010, Norwood became one of three independent schools in the Washington, DC area to serve as a Horizons site school. For the past six summers, Norwood has hosted students from its Horizons partner school, Rock Creek Forest Elementary School, for six weeks of academic, cultural, and recreational enrichment. Norwood is the only Horizons site in Montgomery County.
