One Dead in Fiery Crash on Clara Barton Parkway: Police

A car went off Clara Barton Parkway in the Bethesda area, slammed into a tree and caught fire, killing one person, police say.

GLEN ECHO, MD — One person died early Thursday when a car went off Clara Barton Parkway and slammed into a tree, catching fire, according to the U.S. Park Police.

The accident was reported shortly before 1 a.m. north of the Chain Bridge and south of Glen Echo. Officer found the car near Lock 6 with one person dead inside the vehicle, reports DCW50.

One occupant escaped the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities have not released the names of the two people in the crash.

Investigators say the car was eastbound on Clara Barton Parkway, crossed into oncoming lanes, flipped or tipped over, and struck a tree, catching fire.

The parkway between Chain Bridge Road and the Glen Echo Turn Around / MacArthur Boulevard exit was closed for about five hours before re-opening around 6 a.m., reports FOX DC.
