Police Release Pedestrian's Name in Fatal Accident

An elderly Silver Spring man was hit by a pickup truck and killed Tuesday morning as he tried to cross a Wheaton street, police say.

Montgomery County Police say the accident happened about 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of University Boulevard and Arcola Avenue. The pedestrian -- Ernest Malvin Rounds, 81, of the 1100 block of University Boulevard West in Silver Spring -- was taken to Suburban Hospital, where he later died.

Investigators say Rounds was crossing to the south side of University Boulevard West when he was struck by a 2004 Ford F250 pickup driven by Hector Cortes-Nestor, 44, of the 1500 block of Wheaton Lane in Silver Spring.

Authorities are trying to determine whether Rounds was in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.
