BETHESDA, MD — Racist graffiti was found on Walt Whitman High School's campus over the weekend, Montgomery County school officials said.

A community member first discovered the "n-word" scrawled on the exterior wall of the school's building, Montgomery County Public Schools spokeswoman Gboyinde Onijala told Patch. It is unclear if the community member is a parent of a student.

Walt Whitman's principal, Robert W. Dodd, sent a letter to parents on Monday about the incident.

"I want to emphasize as strongly as possible that hate crimes will not be tolerated in the Walt Whitman High School community," Dodd wrote.

Montgomery County police were informed about the "serious incident" on Sunday and are investigating, Dodd said, adding: "If it is discovered that our students were involved, they will receive serious school-based consequences and may face additional charges from Montgomery County Police."

In response to this incident, Dodd said students will have the opportunity to discuss how hate speech in the community has impacted their school on Wednesday. The school will also host a "Parent Seminar on Race and Equity" at 7 p.m. on March 18.

"Every student deserves to feel like Whitman is their school and is a safe and welcoming place to thrive," Dodd wrote.
