Rockville Woman Killed by Ride On Bus in Bethesda

The woman was crossing Old Georgetown Road when she was hit by a county bus; she died Tuesday night from her injuries.

BETHESDA, MD — Montgomery County Police have released the name of a Rockville pedestrian who died Tuesday night after she was struck by a county Ride On bus.

Detectives are investigating the fatal collision that occurred just before 8 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Battery Lane in Bethesda.

The pedestrian, identified as Devika Gunasekere, 67, of Monroe Street in Rockville, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. She died from her injuries Tuesday night.

Investigators say Gunasekere was crossing Old Georgetown Road at Battery Lane in a marked crosswalk. A Montgomery County Ride On Bus turning left from westbound Battery Lane onto southbound Old Georgetown Road struck Gunasekere.

The driver of the Ride On bus is identified as Kenneth Mullen Jr., 44, of Shadow Oak Court in Montgomery Village.

The four passengers on the bus at the time of the collision were not hurt. Mullen was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injures.

Detectives continue to investigate what the traffic signal and pedestrian crossing signal showed at the time of the collision.
