School Delay in Effect for Montgomery County

'Emergency weather conditions' led to modified schedule on Thursday, Jan. 21, Montgomery County Public Schools officials say.

Montgomery County Public Schools will open two hours late on Thursday, Jan. 21, due to emergency weather conditions, school officials said Thursday morning.

  • Buses will operate on a two-hour-delayed schedule.
  • Field trips, morning prekindergarten, morning half-day Head Start and other morning half-day programs are canceled. Other activities and programs that begin at 10:30 a.m. or earlier are canceled.
  • Administrative offices will open on time.
  • Day care programs in school buildings will open as scheduled as well.
  • Final exams will continue as planned on a two-hour delay

Roads may be icy Thursday morning due to below-freezing temperatures and light snowfall Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Montgomery County received 1.2 inches of snow in Norbeck, with lesser amounts such as 1 inch in Garrett Park and 0.8 inch in Gaithersburg, based on unofficial reports submitted to the weather service.

Drivers are advised to take it slow on ice and snow, being especially careful on bridges, overpasses and shady areas where ice may have developed as well as in parking lots and on untreated roads. Increasing following distance on the road is a good idea, transportation officials say.
