Silver Spring Teen Fatally Stabs Teenager: Police

A 19-year-old from White Oak is charged in the death of an 18-year-old following an assault in the Briggs Chaney area.

A Silver Spring man has been charged with second-degree murder for allegedly stabbing a teenager to death Wednesday in the Briggs Chaney area of Montgomery County.

Mitchell Zio, 19, of the 1500 block of Heather Hollow Circle in the White Oak area of Silver Spring, has been arrested in the case, according to Montgomery County Police.

Multiple callers reported the stabbing about 3:30 p.m. in the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard. Officers found the victim, Derik Benson, 18, lying on his back and suffering from a stab wound. Benson was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Zio was reportedly arrested as he attempted to flee the area. Police say he had blood on his person and a bloody knife was found in his possession.

Investigators say Benson and Zio knew each other.
