Suma Restaurant Opens This Week on Bethesda Row

BETHESDA, MD — The grand opening of the Suma Restaurant + Bar, located at 4921 Bethesda Ave., is set for Tuesday, May 17.

Suma means “born during the summer” in Old English and is meant to reflect the atmosphere of the restaurant with its open, airy, and relaxing dining room and outside patio, the business says. Suma’s lunch, dinner, and brunch menus will offer seasonal, homemade fresh ingredients prepared by Chef Gene Sohn, most recently from Mussel Bar.

“As Bethesda residents, we are very excited to live and work in our community and invite our neighbors to enjoy this cozy spot with some good food and friends,” said owner Jennifer Day in a news release. “We look forward to working with Chef Gene Sohn and General Manager Jay Evans to create healthy and delicious dishes for our guests to enjoy for years to come.”

“I’m especially excited to join the Suma team and offer my take on modern American cuisine,” said Chef Sohn. “I love that the Bethesda community is so tight-knit, and we hope to welcome everyone throughout the year with fresh ingredients and delicious seasonal offerings. I’m also thrilled to be working with my colleague from Mussel Bar, Jay Evans. We have enjoyed collaborating on bar items and fun cocktails for the opening menu.”

The seasonal menu items include Chicken Liver Parfait, Chargrilled Octopus, Sherry Mussels, Roasted Lamb Ragout, and Challah Fried Chicken. The fresh Pizza menu offers toppings that include Duck, Alfredo, Spicy Soppressata, Margherita, Pork Belly, and Roasted Veggies.

Brunch menu items include Fried Chicken and Pancake, Frittata, Truffled Egg Toast, and Eggs Benedict, to name a few.

The bar cocktails are innovative and fun and include Orange Crush, Strawberry Rooster Margarita, Honey-Basil Caipirinha, as well as Oyster shooter flights. Beer flights and three whiskey flights are also included on the bar menu. To view the menus, click here.

Suma Restaurant + Bar is located at the end of Bethesda Row and will open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. Future plans include live music showcasing and fostering local talent.
