Suspect In 2010 Murder Of Bethesda Woman Extradited From Mexico

The suspect in the 2010 murder of Bethesda resident Sue Ann Marcum had fled to Mexico, where he worked as a yoga instructor, police said.

BETHESDA, MD — A suspect in the 2010 killing of a Bethesda woman has been extradited from Mexico to Montgomery County, police said Wednesday.

Jorge Rueda Landeros, 53, is accused of killing Sue Ann Marcum, an accounting professor at American University, and then fleeing to Mexico. Marcum was found dead in the basement of her home in the 6200 block of Massachusetts Ave. in Bethesda on Oct. 25, 2010.

The medical examiner's office determined Marcum’s death was caused by blunt force trauma and asphyxiation, according to the Montgomery County Police Department.

During their investigation, police determined that Rueda Landeros, a dual citizen of Mexico and the U.S., had a personal and financial relationship with Marcum, who was 52 years old when she was killed.

In April 2011, evidence collected from Marcum's home identified Rueda Landeros as a suspect and detectives obtained an arrest warrant the next day, charging him with first-degree murder, police said.

In late 2022, the FBI received information that Rueda Landeros was likely living in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he worked as a yoga instructor under the name Leon Ferrara.

On Dec. 13, 2022, Rueda Landeros was taken into custody by Mexican police after 12 years on the run. The FBI coordinated with Mexican authorities to extradite Rueda Landeros.

He was returned to Montgomery County on Tuesday and taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. He is being held without bond, charged with first-degree murder and unlawful flight, according to police.
