Walter Reed Shelter In Place Lifted, Commanding Officer Says
The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda was locked down due to a bomb threat, but the shelter in place has been lifted.

BETHESDA, MD — The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center shelter in place has been lifted, effective immediately. The commanding officer made the call, announced at 1:18 p.m.
Naval Support Activity Bethesda tweeted that an anonymous call came in around 8:45 this morning that said there was a bomb at Building 10. People at the medical center were told to shelter in place as authorities and K-9 teams canvas Building 10 and surrounding buildings for possible threats.
They have not said if anything was found.

1315, 20OCT21: UPDATE: The installation commanding officer has lifted the shelter in place for all locations effective immediately and has authorized the opening of Gates 1 and 3 for outbound traffic only.

While teams investigate, the complex is closed to non-emergency traffic, but Gates 1 and 3 are allowing outbound traffic. Authorities had reported this morning that they were investigating an active shooter as well, but said at 10 a.m. that there was no threat of a shooter.
"The base is on lockdown," the Naval Support Activity Bethesda tweeted at 9:27 this morning. "All personnel should shelter in place. All gates are closed to non-emergency traffic. The public is asked to avoid the area."
