Weather Alert from Montgomery County Public Schools

The school system sent out message during lunch hour as snow moves into the area.

As snowfall moves into the area, Montgomery County Public Schools has canceled all Wednesday after-school and evening school activities.

School officials say classes will dismiss at normal times today. Day-care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled. Community activities in school buildings will occur, as scheduled.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the area until 6 p.m. Wednesday. The forecast says:

Moderate to heavy snow will affect portions of north central Maryland and the western Washington, D.C., suburbs early this afternoon. Several bands of heavy snow have developed across the area near the Interstate 66 corridor west of the Blue Ridge, along the Potomac River valley from the West Virginia panhandle to the District, and several bands along the Maryland Interstate 70 corridor, as well.

Visibilities with the heavier snow bands will be reduced to around a quarter of a mile at times. Temperatures will hover just below freezing, allowing for accumulation on most surfaces.

Snowfall is expected to linger into the early afternoon hours, dissipating toward the mid-afternoon.
