Westbrook School Celebrate 75th Anniversary

Bethesda's Westbrook Elementary Celebrates its 75th Anniversary with old-fashioned Sock Hop and Anniversary Tea, October 25-26.

Bethesda’s Westbrook Elementary School will celebrate its 75th Anniversary with a weekend of fun and commemorative events. All current parents, former parents, former students, current and former staff and faculty and neighbors and friends of Westbrook are invited to come “home” for both events.

On Saturday, October 25th from 7:00-10:00 pm, Friends of Westbrook School Foundation will host an adults-only “Sock Hop” in the new Westbrook gym. Guests will enjoy great music, and a delicious buffet of hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Fifties-inspired costumes are encouraged but not required. Tickets are just $20 per guest.

On Sunday the 26th, from 4:00-5:30 pm, the 75th Anniversary Tea is open to all who would like to enjoy a lovely afternoon catching up with friends. The event is free of charge, but advanced registration is required.

At the Anniversary Tea, there will be a brief presentation in special recognition of the Westbrook parents and community members who worked on the 1977-1978 Local Evaluation Committee to keep Westbrook open when it faced closure. For their significant contribution to our community, these former Westbrook parents will honored with a display in the “Fireplace” room.

Tickets for both 75th Anniversary events can be purchased online at the link below. The tickets for the Sock Hop are $20 per person. The first 100 people who buy tickets for the Sock Hop will receive a commemorative Westbrook mug (one per family, please). The 75th Anniversary Tea is free of charge but we do need everyone to make a reservation.

Westbrook’s 75th Anniversary was kicked-off in September when Westbrook Principal Jennifer Lane hosted the Westbrook Dedication Ceremony to commemorate the completion of the $13M classroom wing and gymnasium addition. In attendance was Principal Lane, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, MCPS Superintendent Joshua Star, Board of Education member Pat O’Neil, State Delegate Susan Lee, Architect Bill Kirwan of Muse Architects, CEO Charles Hess of Hess Construction, PTA Presidents Erin Harcourt and Maureen Kramer, along with the Westbrook fifth grade chorus, dozens of students and nearly 200 parents and community members joined together for presentations and tours of the building. It was a fantastic way to end the “construction” phase of the three-year building project and turn our focus to celebrating the next 75 years of educating students.

75th Anniversary events will include memorabilia displays. Please send your story or photo from your days at Westbrook to friendsofwestbrook@gmail.com, with a description, your name and dates you were involved at Westbrook.

The 75th Anniversary Weekend is brought to you in part by Friends of Westbrook School Foundation, Inc., with support from the Westbrook PTA and the Westbrook school administration.
