When Will School Year End in Montgomery County?

With the Feb. 26 cancellation of classes, the school system has used all its planned snow days.

Right now, the last day of class for Montgomery County Public Schools is June 12. But will winter weather force school to extend into the third week of June?

Maryland law requires districts to have school a minimum 180 days. A year ago, the brutal winter prompted Montgomery school officials to cancel classes 10 times.

In March 2014, the Maryland State Board of Education voted to allow state waivers for up to five days, so districts didn’t have to add as many days to their calendar.

This year’s school calendar included four snow days, and the last of those was used Feb. 26. If the school year should be disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed, the school year will be extended. Here’s what the school system website says about any further closings:

  • 5 days: the school year will be extended by one day to Monday, June 15, 2015;
  • 6 days: the school year will be extended by two days to June 15 and June 16, 2015;
  • 7 days: the school year will be extended by three days to June 15, 16 and 17, 2015;
  • 8 days: the school year will be extended by four days to June 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2015; and
  • 9 days: the school year will be extended by five days to June 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, 2015.

Montgomery Community Media reports schools will not open on holidays, reduce spring break or cancel negotiated professional days to offset snow days.
