Our practice has specialized in root canal treatment in Bethesda/Chevy Chase for any years, and we understand that many patients both young and old cringe at the thought of having root canal therapy. Nearly everyone has heard a horror story or two about the procedure, but the truth is that root canal therapy is not nearly as awful as the tall tales report it to be. Modern technologies and techniques make the procedure less intrusive, easier and less painful than ever before.
Much of the apprehension surrounding root canal therapy stems from a lack of understanding about the procedure and why it is done. Root canal treatment is performed when a tooth is very infected or decayed, and the goal is to prevent the need for extraction. The natural tooth can be saved by removing the nerves and pulp inside, and a root canal dentist, or Endodontist, uses a series of files and fine drill heads to remove these components. Debris and bacteria are cleaned from the tooth's walls, and the hollow canals are then filled with a synthetic substance and sealed off to prevent future infections.
Patients may experience sensitivity and discomfort around the affected tooth for a few days, but that is normal and generally can be reduced using over-the-counter pain medications.
The potential discomfort of having root canal therapy is little compared to the pain of having an infected tooth. Most patients actually feel relief following the treatment because the infection is eliminated. The procedure is also far less painful than having an extraction, and treatment significantly reduces the possibility of future infections and the need for more extensive procedures.
So no need to fear root canals, and be sure to discuss any questions you have with your Endodontist.
