On May 31 around 1:50 p.m., police officers with the District Heights Police Department and Prince George's Police Department were called to the 6600 block of Atwood Street for a report of a shooting. They found Khamya Ferrell, 14, of Suitland with a gunshot wound along with a woman who had been shot inside the apartment and a man who had been shot outside the apartment. The adults' injuries aren't considered life-threatening.

Ferrell was pronounced clinically dead June 5. Detectives are working to identify a suspect and determine a motive in the shooting. They do not believe Ferrell was the intended target. Her father has said she was visiting a friend after attending classes at Suitland High School.
