OXON HILL, MD — A man and woman are dead following a shooting at an Oxon Hill grocery store, Prince George's County police confirmed Friday.

The shooting happened at Giant Food, located at 20 Audrey Lane, shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday police confirmed. According to authorities, the shooting happened when a male security guard confronted a woman they say was shoplifting from the store.

Witnesses told police that during the confrontation, the woman pulled a gun from a backpack and started shooting at the security guard. The security guard returned fire, and both were fatally hit.

The security guard was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman died at the hospital a short time later, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the shooting.
