Do you have any previous political experience? If so, please state and explain how that experience will influence your time in office if elected.
I previously served one term as Board of Director for Towns of Kettering HOA and I currently volunteer some of my time on a grassroots level with the Coalition for Smarter Growth as well as the Blue Line Corridor Committee. I have also served honorably for 6 years in the Virginia Air National Guard as an enlisted troop with a civil engineering response force known as RED HORSE. These different experiences helped shape my work ethic, how I view politics, address problems and engage with others.
What do you believe is the single-most important issue facing voters in the district you’re looking to represent? How do you intend to address those issues?
Our biggest issue is economic development. We have the framework, infrastructure and people to be on equal footing with areas such as Silver Spring and Arlington, but we need a consistent vision. In order to address the quality of jobs, schools, roads, and public transportation, you need strong revenue. Residential property taxes alone will not suffice, nor is it realistic. I intend to address this problem by following the approved Plan 2035 that guides our development. I would look for ways to make it easier for our small business owners to not only open, but thrive. I would focus on our TOD areas to make them more safe and appealing for residents and investors. I would also look for alternative uses for our spaces that have been closed or neglected over time.
How do you differ from other candidates running against you?
I am not running a campaign. I am not accepting donations, endorsements, partnership or anything of the sort. I plan to Do Something Different. I simply wish to work for the betterment of District 6 and the county at large.
How would your work experience benefit the goals/objectives you’ve outlined in your campaign and/or the office you’re seeking?
As a millennial coming up during the Great Recession I have had to make several pivots in my life and worked a variety of career fields. I believe I have been molded into someone that is adaptable, eager to learn and determined to deliver. I look for areas of opportunity and unconventional ways of addressing long standing issues. Being an outsider in the political space I believe gives me a fresh set of eyes and ideas versus settling for more of the same.
What is your opinion of the work being done by the current office holder, and how will you improve on it?
If that is you - how do you plan to continue improving upon what you've already accomplished? The current office holder was recently brought in via special election. Due to lack of a track record, I have no opinion at this time.
How do you feel about the school system in your area and what improvements would you like to see be made?
I would like to see more resources for our educators, better services for our students with special needs and more disciplinary actions for the small group of disruptors in our schools who wish to make it a fight club.
How do you feel about crime in your area and what steps can be taken to reduce it?
Crime has often been the elephant in the room with respect to our county. Whether true or not is not important. What is important is the perception. I do not feel we are viewed as taking crime seriously and that it is all we’re known for. I believe the penalty should fit the crime and that the penalty should increase if they are a repeat offender. I believe more resources should be poured into problematic errors not only from a police standpoint, but health and wellness as well.
What do you think about the economic climate and business sector in your community, and what initiatives could propel it forward?
In my opinion, the economic climate is not good. We are not passing bills that entice business to come and/or invest. Meanwhile, for the past 4 years, we seem to have made it a point to penalize the businesses that are here. I believe we need to get serious about modernizing DPIE, increase collaboration amongst districts, place a moratorium on the storefronts that are possibly oversaturated while at the same time cutting red tape and fees to bring in fresh business.
How do you feel about transportation options in the area and what, if anything, should be improved upon?
Most of District 6 sits outside the beltway where there is only one metro station (Largo) and depending on where you live, limited bus routes. While I would like to see this expand, I think the focus should start in the more dense areas in terms of bus frequency and safer streets for alternative modes of transportation (bikes, mopeds, scooters, etc)
What else would you like voters to know about you?
I have called Prince George’s County home nearly my entire life. I moved here from North Carolina at the age of 8 and have been in the Largo area since the age of 10. I graduated from PGCPS and received my Bachelors from North Carolina A&T State University. Once we were in a position to do so, my wife and I decided to buy our first home in the same neighborhood I grew up in. My desire to run simply put is to ensure the quality of life here does not diminish and is suitable for our young daughter. I want my child to cherish this area the same way that I do. I do not seek positions or attention. I simply wish to do the work and give back.
