Charges in 6-Month Old's Death in Capitol Heights: Police

Police have arrested the boy's step-grandfather on charges of manslaughter and child abuse leading to death.

CAPITOL HEIGHTS — Police have arrested the step-grandfather of a 6-month-old boy after finding the baby dead from injuries to his head.

Police were called to the 300 block of Zelma Avenue in Capitol Heights at around 7:15 p.m. Sept. 13 over a report of an injured baby, according to a report from the Prince George's County Police Department.

Six-month-old Demetri Hooper of Landover was rushed to the hospital, but he died three days later. An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be trauma to the baby's head, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Police arrested 48-year-old Lenwood Pearson of Capitol Heights in connection with the homicide, according to the report. Pearson faces charges of manslaughter, first-degree child abuse resulting in death and first and second degree assault. He is being held at the Department of Corrections.

"The preliminary investigation reveals the injuries to the baby occurred while in the sole care and custody of Pearson," the report states.
