9 New Coronavirus Deaths In PG County; Total Cases Top 15,000

Maryland Department of Health confirmed 294 new positive cases of the new coronavirus in Prince George's County.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — The Maryland Department of Health confirmed Saturday there were nine new deaths due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus, in Prince George's County. This is after there were no new deaths reported on Friday. The overall total of deaths in the county attributed to the disease stands at 515.

The Health Department did confirm 249 new positive cases of COVID-19 in Prince George's County, bringing the overall total number of positive cases in the county to 15,022.

In the county's congregant facilities, such as senior living centers and group homes, there have been 388 total positive cases and four confirmed deaths among staff members and 905 confirmed cases and 202 deaths among residents in Prince George's County, according to the latest data.

Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks signed executive order Thursday to lift her stay-at-home order and allow the county to enter the first stage of a modified phased reopening on Monday. Among a number of changes, stage one of the reopening allows restaurants in the county to be able to serve customers in outside dining areas, and barbershops and hair salons will be able to provide hair cutting services with some restrictions.

City of Laurel Mayor Craig A. Moe of the signed an executive order Friday reopening the city in the first stage of the modified phased reopening.

Globally, more than 5.9 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 365,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Friday morning. In the United States, more than 1.7 million people have been infected and over 102,000 people have died from COVID-19.

Prince George's County still has the highest number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus of any county in the state, according to the latest data from the Maryland Department of Health. Second on the list is Montgomery County, with a total of 11,251 positive infections. However, Montgomery does have more COVID-19-related deaths than Prince George's County with 565 deaths as of Saturday morning.

The CDC advises doing the following to stop the spread of the virus:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If this is not available, use hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Keep 6 feet of space between people.
  • Stay home.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
