AAA Worker Hit, Killed By Passing Motorist While Helping Stranded Driver

With less than a year until he retired, a AAA worker was hit and killed by a passing Jeep while assisting a driver stranded along Route 50.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — While providing fuel to a driver who ran out of gas along Route 50, a AAA worker was hit and killed by a vehicle passing by.

Anthony Okozi, 69, of Upper Marlboro was assisting the driver whose van had stalled partially in the inside lane and left shoulder of Route 50. Okozi had parked his AAA vehicle directly behind the van with its emergency yellow strobe lights activated and traffic cones sitting out. The incident occurred shortly after 11:15 p.m. according to the Maryland State Police.

A black Jeep Cherokee Laredo driven by Joseph Anderson, 21, of Rockville, was heading westbound on Route 50. For reasons unknown at this time, he swerved to the left to avoid the AAA vehicle and struck Okozi while he was fueling the disabled vehicle. Okozi was wearing a reflective vest at the time of the crash, the police reported.

“Our hearts go out to Anthony’s loved ones as well as his AAA colleagues during this very difficult time. We will be forever grateful to Anthony and all first responders who have given their lives while helping others,” Kevin Micsko, vice president, fleet operations, AAA Club Alliance, said.

Anthony joined the AAA Upper Marlboro Fleet in June of last year. Supervisors say he had taken the job as he transitioned into his retirement next year.
