PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A candidate for the office of Prince George's county executive has sued the county elections board after it determined she didn't secure enough signatures to appear on general election ballots as an unaffiliated candidate in November.
Moisette Tonya Sweat, a consultant and community advocate who Patch had interviewed before the primary election, announced earlier this month she had attained the necessarily number of signatures to put her name on the ballot. But there appeared to be some confusion about the total number required, and shortly before the Aug. 3 deadline, she collected an additional 215 signatures, according to The Banner.
Sweat filed a lawsuit the day after the Prince George's County Elections Board decided she didn't have enough signatures. She's asking for the circuit court to determine if the county elections board followed state law when making its decision and if not, to force the board to place her on the November ballot for the county executive race.
"This campaign is not suspended. It's not ended. It's not over," Sweat said in an interview on Thursday with The Banner.
