Arrest in Woman's Death Along Hyattsville Trail

Authorities say the 20-year-old victim had been in a relationship with her alleged killer.

HYATTSVILLE, MD — The former boyfriend of a woman whose body was found along a trail in Hyattsville has been charged with her murder, authorities said.

Prince George’s County Police Department said Thursday that officers have arrested Marvin Vazquez-Juarez, 18, of no fixed address in the New Year’s Day homicide.

The victim, 20-year-old Catherine Alvarado, was found on the Northwest Branch Trail suffering from stab wounds to the upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Patrol officers with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police Department and the Prince George’s County Police Department were called to the trail in the 6100 block of Ager Road about 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 1.

During the course of the investigation, detectives developed Vazquez-Juarez as the suspect. He and the victim had previously been in a relationship.

Vazquez-Juarez is charged with first- and second-degree murder. He is being held by the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
