Babysitter Charged With Child Abuse For Burning Baby’s Feet

A 36-year-old woman from Blandensburg was arrested for child abuse and reckless endangerment after she burned a six-month-old baby's feet.

BLANDENSBURG, MD — A Prince George's County mother was shocked when she noticed that her baby had second-degree burns on her feet after staying at her babysitter's house. The babysitter — Ismelda Ramos Mendoza, 36, of Blandensburg — allegedly touched the six-month-old girl's feet against a hot pan on the stove because she was frustrated that the girl wouldn't stop crying, NBC Washington reports.

Police charged Mendoza with first- and second-degree child abuse charges and reckless endangerment.

According to court documents, the child's mom took her daughter to Mendoza's house around 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 22. She returned three hours later to pick up the baby.

The mother noticed the redness on the bottom of the girl's feet the next morning and asked Mendoza if she knew what happened. The next day, small blisters started to form, so the mother took her child to a doctor.

The doctor immediately called 911 to take the girl to the hospital because the burns were so severe. She was admitted to the hospital for a few days for the second-degree burns.

Allegedly, Mendoza first told the Bladensburg Police Department that the girl's feet bumped into a tortilla that had been taken off of a hot pan.

The court documents then say Mendoza later admits to becoming frustrated with the girl, and was so angry she placed the girl's "feet on the pan she was cooking the tortilla on."
