As many of you know, I have a book due out soon. I did a very exciting thing
this week which was, I read an excerpt from my book at a new author expo at a
local senior center. What a great idea or, so I thought. I arrived early and was
sitting outside with some older folks until the center opened. They were cute,
some had tattoos, some were blue haired and some had hearing aids and walkers. I
thought this is great, they are able to get up and out and socialize, I hope
some day, I'll be doing the same thing. The doors then opened and I walked up to
the information desk and the very nice lady asked me if I was there to join!!!!
I quickly glanced around to see who she might be talking to and saw my daughter
exiting stage left in a fit of laughter! Then it hit me, she was talking to me!
I asked her how old one had to be to join and quickly retracted that statement
with please don't answer that question! For those of you that know me, I work
out, I am one who likes to look good for my age, I have had peels and would do
it again, apparently, sooner rather than later now!
I asked where the book expo was and now in the back of my mind, I had to get
up in front of several people thinking I needed help from my daughter. As we are
walking by the work out room, my daughter looks in and says "see, you and daddy
can have some time together here" Gee, I just can't wait, go ask the woman who
needs glasses for an application, stat!
I found my table and set up, and as it turned out, I knew many people there!
So, maybe I was guilty by association in this case. Where do the 29 year olds
hang out these days anyway? What are you doing here Beth many of them asked,
(see, they even knew me by name!) I'm going to be talking about my new book.
What? I'm going to be talking about my new book. You write? I do, is it coming
out in large print? My grandson gave me a tripod, will I be able to listen to it
on that? Well.... he'll help you get it on your Ipod, don't worry! Are none of
your friends here this morning, no, most 29 and 30 year olds are working at this
hour of the day, you remember right? Remember what?

Beth, a bunch of us are getting together for coffee after, why don't you join
us? I really need to take my daughter home, next time okay? Mom she said, I
drove....
On the way out, my curiosity was really getting the better of me, I asked the
woman at the desk, how old you had to be to join, she said 55. Whew, I have a
long way to go I thought! Well, if you think 9 months is a long time. Ask any
pregnant woman out there,I bet she'll agree with me!

The morning actually went great for me, I was well received, met some great
new folks and I believe I may even sell a book or two, that is if they come out
in large print!
If one really stops and listens to an older person, you truly will learn from
them, they are a wealth of knowledge and an old story here and there can be
great. Made me miss my dad.
With this said, if you have aging parents, give them some time here and
there, really, that's all they want and perhaps a large print book! Better yet,
read to them, I have a great suggestion....my book!
