Christmas Eve Shooter Faces 36 Charges In Driver's Death: Prince George's County Police

The man accused of shooting a father driving to Christmas Eve dinner with his family faces 36 charges, Prince George's County Police said.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A 25-year-old man has been identified by police as the shooter suspected of killing 30-year-old Danny Kelly Jr. on Christmas Eve.

The fatal shooting happened while Kelly was driving his family to a holiday dinner shortly before 5 p.m. in the 4400 block of St. Barnabas Road.

According to the police, Kelly, his girlfriend and his three children were northbound on St. Barnabas Road when a GMC Envoy pulled up alongside his vehicle and Markell Lewis of Clinton opened fire.

Police said Kelly was found unresponsive in the driver's seat of his SUV suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital.

Detectives said last month they are looking into whether this was possible road rage.

"This is an absolutely heartbreaking loss for Mr. Kelly's family and friends. He was not home with his loved ones on Christmas who are now mourning his loss. St. Barnabas Road is a heavily travelled roadway. If any other drivers saw anything there on Christmas Eve or may have information that could help, please call us. You can stay anonymous. We are committed to providing answers to his family," Prince George's Acting Major David Blazer of the Major Crimes Division said.

The police department discovered the Envoy was registered to a family member of Lewis. He was arrested at his home and the gun used in the shooting was recovered at that time. Detectives continue to search for the Envoy.

Lewis has confessed to the shooting and faces 36 charges including first-degree murder, second-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder, police said.

A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.
