County Police Veteran Tapped for Deputy Police Chief in Bowie

After the city's first ever Deputy Police Chief—John Nesky—, the city will now have a new deputy chief starting in January.

Preston will assume his new duties in Bowie on Jan. 3, 2012, and Nesky said he is looking forward to Preston's appointment.

"He brings a great deal of experience to the position along with a firm commitment to the tenets of community policing. He is an excellent addition and will be a tremendous asset as we continue to grow and shape the department," he said.   

City Manager David J. Deutsch made the announcement today that Bowie has appointed Dwayne A. Preston as deputy chief of the Bowie Police Department.

Preston resides in Fort Washington, MD, graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School and holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Bowie State University and an MBA from the University of Maryland, University College.

Preston has 21 years with the Prince George’s County Police Department where he began as a patrol officer and also served as Community Oriented Policing coordinator, lieutenant commander of the Major Narcotics Section,  assistant commander of the Criminal Investigations Division and commander of District VI (Beltsville). 

He is currently serving as deputy chief for the Bureau of Administration within the county police department. He oversees the Bureau of Administration, which includes personnel, the training academy, fiscal management and risk management and he supervises commanders of the Criminal Investigations, Narcotic Enforcement, Forensic Services and Special Investigations divisions.

“Preston’s excellent and varied experience within the Prince George’s County Police Department and his focus there on building community partnerships were key factors in his selection,” said Deutsch in a release from the city.

“We are delighted that he will be joining our young department and are confident that he will enhance the strong partnership that we have with the Prince George’s County Police in keeping our community safe.”
