Upper Marlboro Doctor Charged For Selling Narcotics Prescriptions For Cash: Prosecutor

An Upper Marlboro doctor faces 29 charges for illegally selling narcotics prescriptions for cash to people in 37 states, court docs show.

UPPER MARLBORO, MD — A physician from Upper Marlboro has been charged in federal court on a 29-count for illegally distributing prescriptions for narcotics in exchange for cash.

According to court documents, Ndubuisi Joseph Okafor, M.D., 64, distributed oxycodone and promethazine with codeine to individuals outside of his Washington, D.C., practice and without a legitimate medical reason. He also distributed controlled substances to individuals he knew were abusing the medication and were selling to others, court documents stated.

Court documents stated that Okafor distributed the prescriptions to individuals in at least 37 states and was paid in cash for each prescription. Okafor was previously indicted in March 2023 for distribution of controlled substances outside the legitimate practice of medicine. The superseding indictment unsealed yesterday charges Okafor with a total of 29 counts. If convicted, Okafor faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each count.
