Prince George's Gymnast Nabs 3 Gold Medals At Overseas Competition

A gymnast from Prince George's County secured three gold medals at the DTB Pokal Team Challenge held recently in Germany.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A 19-year-old gymnast from Bowie who joined the gymnastics program offered at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex as a preschooler in 2006 has won individual titles on the pommel horse and vault at the DTB Pokal Team Challenge in Germany.

Khoi Young joined the Sportsplex Gymnastics team in 2008. Under the mentorship of Coach Bob Lundy, Young went on to compete at the collegiate level for Stanford University.

On March 18, Young participated at the Team Challenge as a member of the United States Men’s National Team at the artistic gymnastics competition. He scored a 15.000 on pommel horse and 14.916 on vault to collect his second and third gold medals of the weekend.

Young teamed up with Winter Cup all-around champion Vitaliy Guimaraes (Arvada, Colo./University of Oklahoma), first-year senior Asher Hong (Tomball, Texas/Cypress Academy of Gymnastics), 2020 Olympians Brody Malone (Belfast, Tenn./Stanford University) and Yul Moldauer (Wellington, Colo./5280 Gymnastics) in the senior division to deliver a cumulative 249.100 in a four-up-three-count format to clip the Italian team (247.800) by just over a point. Host-country Germany was third with a 241.800.

The 2022 DTB Pokal Team Challenge and Mixed Cup is an artistic gymnastics competition. It features a Team Challenge that has five-person teams representing their country in separate men's and women's junior and senior divisions and a mixed cup featuring teams comprised of three men and three women. The mixed cup features teams from four nations: host nation Germany, Italy, Canada and the United States.
