Letter to the Editor: Bowie Councilmember Todd Turner

Dear Editor,
 
I write to urge the voting residents of Bowie and the 23rd Legislative District to support the State Democratic Team of Governor Martin O'Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski and U.S. Congressman Steny Hoyer in the Maryland General Election on Nov. 2. Every election is important because it sets course of the future direction of the City, the County and the State and I encourage everyone to participate.
 
Each of the candidates has shown their commitment to public service and the needs of the residents during their years of service.  While there might be an inclination, given the tough economic times we have experienced over the past several years, to get rid of those that current serve as a vehicle for change. However, I think these times actually call for steady and experienced hands to guide our state and country.  I believe that Governor O'Malley and Lt. Governor Brown, Senator Mikulski and Congressman Hoyer have provided the type of leadership and governance that has served our area and state well.
 
Gov. O'Malley and Lt. Gov. Brown have held true to their commitments from four years ago to assist the middle class by providing tax relief, focusing on primary and secondary education with record investments in state funding for K through 12, school construction and freezing college tuition, protecting our environment and reducing crime which has hit the lowest rate since 1975.  All this is a fiscal climate that required them to address a $1.7 billion dollar inherited deficit, reducing the state budget by 3 percent and the government workforce by 4.6 percent.  That is why they have been endorsed for re-election by The Washington Post. 
 
Senator Mikulski is the longest serving woman in the U.S. Senate and is considered the dean of the women senators, serving as a mentor to newly elected female colleagues and building coalitions among colleagues both male and female, liberal and conservative. She uses her training as a social worker to listen to the concerns and needs of all Marylanders.  Sen. Mikulski has been endorsed by the Gazette Newspapers. 

Congressman Hoyer is the Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, the second most powerful position in that body.  However, even while obtaining this important position, he has maintained his commitment to serving the needs and interests of the residents of the 5th Congressional District.

I again urge everyone to participate on Nov. 2 and know that you will support the state democratic team for our area.
