Man Sentenced In UDC Student-Athlete's March 2021 Fatal Shooting
A 32-year-old man has been sentenced in the March 2021 fatal shooting of UDC student-athlete Dorian Hurd, 20.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — The man convicted in the death of a University of the District of Columbia (UDC) student-athlete in March 2021 has been sentenced to life plus 38 years.
Prince George's County State's Attorney Aisha Braveboy announced the sentencing of 32-year-old Tevin Ream, who in July of 2023 was found guilty of killing 20-year-old Dorian Hurd, a 6'7" basketball player, outside a tattoo shop in the 4300 block of St. Barnabas Road on March 18, 2021.
During Ream's 2023 trial, officials said he was caught on video opening fire on Hurd without provocation. Officials said Ream took off across the street after the shooting and tried to dump the gun. He reportedly entered a cleaners and hid the weapon but was arrested when he exited the business. No motive has ever been uncovered as to why Ream opened fire without saying a single word, prosecutors said.

Braveboy said during a news conference that the sentencing was one of the most significant sentences handed down in the Upper Marlboro courthouse.
"We are very pleased that Judge Hill saw it fit that we are always protected from this individual," Braveboy said. "He murdered Dorian Hurd, let's be clear about that. This was a senseless, brutal, vicious killing. Dorian did nothing to deserve what happened to him."

Hurd came from a big and loving family, according to WJLA. His sister, Sierra Prather, said the two years since his murder have been brutal.
"He was my best friend for a reason. He literally was the funniest goofiest person," Prather said. "Anybody out here could literally tell you no matter what situation you were in. If you were sad or angry, he could make you laugh in 2.3 seconds."
