Most of 28 Cats Dumped at Shelter Find New Homes

Nearly 30 cats and kittens were left in crates outside the Greenbelt Animal Shelter; only one mama cat and her kittens still need homes.

Greenbelt, MD — A Prince George’s County animal shelter that was swamped with cats and kittens when boxes and crates with animals were left at the facility says almost all the pets now have homes.

The Greenbelt Animal Shelter was unable to house the nearly 30 cats and kittens comfortably. So Alley Cat Rescue stepped in to take 11 of the abandoned felines and place them in new homes.

Boxes of kittens were dumped outside the City of Greenbelt Animal Shelter on June 3 and 4, and the rescue group coordinated getting them all into foster care or to other area rescues.

Shelter officials say the 28 cats that were left at the shelter’s doorstep in boxes and plastic crates have almost all been adopted or placed with rescue groups.

And this week there is good news: The only cats that have not landed in new homes are a mother and her litter of kittens that she delivered shortly before being left at the shelter, reports WTOP. In about four weeks, mom and all five kittens will be ready for adoption.

The influx was, in a way, good news for cats already at the shelter. The publicity about the case drew people to the shelter, who adopted cats already in need of homes, and donations to the facility have increased.
