Middle Schooler Takes Loaded Gun To School To Show Friends: Prince George's Police

A 13-year-old William Wirt student took a loaded gun to school to "show off to friends." Police are investigating the incident.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — An investigation continues into a 13-year-old student taking a loaded gun into William Wirt Middle School.

According to the Prince George's County Police Department, the incident occurred at 11:40 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Hyattsville school. A student told a school security officer that a fellow classmate had the gun. The student admitted to having the gun and that it was in a classroom drawer.

In a letter addressed to the school community, William Wirt Middle School Principal Rhonda Simley said the student will be "disciplined accordingly."

"The safety of our students is our top priority," Simley's letter stated. "Please assist in our efforts to maintain a safe learning environment by discussing with your child acceptable behaviors that support a positive school climate. Discuss with your child the consequences, such as expulsion, for bringing weapons or anything that resembles a weapon to school."

According to ABC7, the gun contained six bullets and belonged the student's father. The student said he took the weapon to school to "show it off to friends."
