Man Who Shot Officer Had Violent Past: Chief

A slain Prince George's County cop was shot five times with a shotgun, and his killer was later fatally shot by police, authorities say.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD -- The officer killed in Brandywine on Wednesday was shot five times with a shotgun by a neighbor's estranged husband, a manwho had a violent past, Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said at a press conference.

The shooter, 37-year-old Glenn Tydell, was later shot to death in a confrontation with police. He had a history of domestic violence, Stawinski said. Police say Tydell killed Cpl. Mujahid Ramzziddin while the officer protected his neighbor, Tydell's estranged wife.

"What I can tell you, based on the video I have personally seen, is that the suspect in this -- Mr. Tydell -- advanced upon our officer and fired five times with a shotgun," he said. "Our officer ... was grievously wounded and lost his life in this confrontation. Our officer found himself in that circumstance because he was protecting a neighbor who had sought his assistance with an ongoing dispute with the suspect."

Stawinski added that Tydell's ex-wife and his estranged wife both had sought protection from Tydell from the courts "because of his violent behavior," he said.

After shooting Ramzziddin, Tydell took the officer's weapon and fled, Stawinski said.

"There is a second confrontation with our officers on 210," he said. "I have a number of officers who have stated clearly: Mr. Tydell exits his vehicle, armed with a handgun, a number of shots are exchanged. We have collected numerous shell casings."

While police do not believe the officer's weapon was fired at the initial confrontation with Tydell, they have found rounds missing from his service weapon. Police are conducting a forensic analysis to determine who shot the gun, Stawinski said.
