A PG County man who helped manage Montgomery County's Ride On bus system has died of the coronavirus.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — Prince George's County resident Michael Miller, 60, died Wednesday evening from the coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

Miller was an employee of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) since 2011 and helped to run the Ride On bus fleet. He is the first Montgomery County employee to die of COVID-19.

“I’m very sorry to report the death of our first County employee due to COVID-19,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, in a press release. “The loss of a valued County employee is hard on everyone, especially during these difficult times.”

Although Miller had been out of work since March 30 with illness symptoms, Montgomery County did not receive confirmation of his COVID-19 diagnosis until April 7, when PG County public health staff had begun conducting contact tracing.

“Mike worked hard every day to make sure buses left the depot in good condition, and on time, to serve the residents of Montgomery County,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “All of his co-workers in the Silver Spring/Bethesda Depot and the Department of Transportation are mourning the loss of a great friend and colleague.”

At Elrich's direction, county flags were lowered to half staff to honor Miller's memory.

MCDOT Depot Chief Andre Lucas said: “He was particularly appreciated for his infectious smile and caring personality, his dedication to his fellow co-workers and his job duties. He was much appreciated for his willingness to go above and beyond at any moment to get the job done.”

Miller is survived by his wife, Donna, and their children.
