PG County Updates Its Plans For Remainder Of School Year
Prince George's County Public Schools responds to state education official's mandate to end the 2019-20 academic year over coronavirus.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — State Superintendent of Education Dr. Karen Salmon announced Wednesday that all Maryland public schools would be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year to stem the spread of COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus.
What does that mean for Prince George's County Public Schools?
Monica Goldson, chief executive officer for PGCPS, issued a letter to the school community following Salmon's announcement in which she echoed support of the state official's decision and outlined how PGCPS would proceed.

"Although school buildings are closed, we will keep learning in motion," Goldson said, in the letter. "Our distance learning program will continue through the end of the 2019-20 academic year with online teaching, lessons broadcast on PGCPS-TV and enrichment learning packets."
The last day of the school year for PGCPS' high school seniors will be May 15, and the last day for the rest of the system's students will be June 16. Teachers will have their last day on June 18.

PGCPS will rely on state social distancing guidelines and restrictions on mass gatherings to determine when individuals would be able to pick up items left in schools when doors were closed in March.
The grab and go meals program will continue to offer free breakfast, lunch, and supper. PGCPS will expand service to six new locations starting May 11.
Before the school year ends, PGCPS will share its plans for academic enrichment over the summer and what families can expect in the fall.
"I appreciate everything that you have done to keep your families healthy and safe during this time," Goldson said. "While none of us could have predicted the school year would end this way, I am committed to finishing what we started together — PGCPS proud and PGCPS strong — as one community, one village."
