Predicted Icy Roads Cancel Monday School Events

Prince George's County is under a winter weather advisory, with sleet and ice expected Monday.

Although all Prince George’s County Public Schools are closed Monday for Presidents’ Day, the expected icy weather has canceled some athletic events.

Sunday night the school system sent out this note:

All transportation to athletic events and non-public schools are canceled for Monday, February 15, 2016. The track meet scheduled to take place at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex is canceled.

Prince George’s County is under a winter weather advisory from 1 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the National Weather Service calling for a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Look for accumulations of 2 to 5 inches of snow and sleet, along with one-tenth of an inch of ice from freezing rain.

The snow will begin between midnight and 3 a.m. Monday morning, and change to sleet and freezing rain Monday afternoon.

The precipitation will switch to all freezing rain Monday evening. Precipitation will gradually change to rain late Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Temperatures will be in the teens to near 20 tonight, rising into the upper 20s to lower 30s Monday into Monday night.

Snow and ice will cause slippery roads and travel will be difficult.
