Riverdale Woman Dies Days After House Fire

The woman had been rescued from her burning home, but succumbed to burn and smoke inhalation injuries on Sunday.

RIVERDALE, MD — A Riverdale resident has died after being pulled from a burning home on Sheridan Street back on Nov. 23, according to a report from the Prince George's County Fire Department.

Fire and rescue personnel responded to a working house fire in the 6300 block of Sheridan Street at around 4:30 a.m. on that date and rescued a 74-year-old woman who was suffering from burn and smoke inhalation injuries. She was taken to Medstar Washington Hospital Center Burn Unit in critical condition.

"Despite the heroic efforts of firefighters, diligent pre-hospital medical care by medics combined with the very best care of emergency department and burn unit medical staff the patient succumbed to her injuries on Sunday afternoon, November 27," the report states.

Authorities identified the woman as Emily Novotny. The cause remain under investigation, but it appears to be accidental in nature.

It is the 9th accidental fire fatality in Prince George's County in 2016, compared to three in 2015 and five in 2014.
